Yes. New instruments intended for the EEA market place (EU plus EFTA except Switzerland) which are in use for trade, used for medical purposes (weighing patients and medicines) and in the applications of laws (subject to existing transitional arrangements up to the year 2002), may be granted EC Type Approval. These instruments are subject to the provisions of the Council Directive 90/384/EEC, as amended, which is implemented into UK law under “The Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2000 (SI 2000 No 3236, as amended). All electronic and most mechanical non-automatic weighing instruments (NAWI’s) used for the above purposes have to be type approved. For type examination, instruments need to meet the essential requirements of the Directive 90/384/EEC. The metrological aspects of the instrument can be assessed against the requirements of the European Standard EN45501.
