Can pain persist (continue) after the rash has disappeared?
Discomfort caused by the rash of shingles usually resolves (goes away) within several weeks. Those who are over 60 years of age, and those with weakened immune systems, may have pain that persists for longer than eight weeks (in up to 73% of individuals). Older people are also more likely to get postherpetic (after herpes) neuralgia, which is pain that is still present three or more months after the rash has disappeared.
