Personally, I do not believe that a simple episode of psychosis can turn into a long term mental illness. Rather, I believe that the psychosis may well be a manifestation of an underlying and undiagnosed mental illness, which can include schizophrenia, but there are infinite other possibilities. I also assume that this would be diagnosed, if the person dealing with psychosis is already receiving treatment.
