Can renewable energy sources sustain affluent society?
The use of such technologies can create jobs, reduce air pollution at the local level, and reduce water consumption. Technologies for generating energy from renewable sources are almost exclusively based on the use of local resources and, therefore, help to protect our economies from external shocks related to energy security. The highly modular nature of many of these technologies, especially solar photovoltaics and onshore wind power, also means that for the first time in the history of electricity, individuals and communities are playing an active role in their own electricity supply. As such, renewable energy technologies mark the transition to a more democratic and even energy system.
