Posted at: 08/24/2010 9:23 AM Nicotine is what makes smoking so addictive and could also be the culprit in some breast cancers. Researchers in Taiwan analyzed human breast tumor cells and found a nicotine receptor was over-expressed in tumor cells suggesting smoking may have caused the breast cancer and nicotine indirectly contributes by fueling the addiction to smoking. Another study says that one or more alcoholic drinks a day could increase the risk for certain kinds of breast cancer. Researchers in Seattle looked at data on nearly 3,000 older women. They found alcohol intake increased the risk for lobular and hormone receptor-positive breast cancer but not necessarily the more common tumors in the milk ducts. The risk was about the same, no matter which kind of alcohol the women drank. For more Rochester, N.Y. news go to our website www.whec.com.
