Can some one explain why president Bush has been called a dictator by liberals?
Bush and Cheney are proponents of what is called the “unitary executive” theory of government, which means that more and more power is garnered to the president and less power to the other two branches. Cheney was very upset that Nixon was forced out of office with the threat of impeachment, and he decided that if he ever got in power again, he would not let this reoccur. Once in this administration, he set out to make sure that Bush and Rove found each and every large and small opportunity to grab power, most of the time below the radar of the American people and the media. The latest example was the May 9th presidential directive that Bush signed assigning himself dictatorial powers in case of an emergency and making himself the only “decider” of what constitutes an emergency. The unitary executive theory of government completely overrides the intent of our Founding Fathers, which was to have three branches of government that acted as checks and balances on each other.
