The projections are the manifestations of the subconscious of members of the dream. They behave like white blood cells, attacking anything ‘foreign’ (ie, the dreamer or owner of that particular subconscious). Any unnatural behavior (such as Ariadne messing with the buildings and landscapes) will lead them to attack. Cobb’s projections of Mal were particularly troublesome because of the guilt he felt about her death.
