I have heard of reports of people acquiring it and not knowing they have herpes. But most of those cases are people acquiring it and not recognizing it is herpes. Anyone I’ve talked to who has it, pretty much knew something was wrong down there and went and had it checked out to find out it was herpes. Other cases are just as you mentioned where they got it sometime ago and then have an another outbreak and then get it checked it out to find out it was herpes. At that point if the person was sexually active it can be hard to determine who/where they got it. There are some who get a mild first outbreak which can make it harder for someone to recognize it has herpes. Those who have oral herpes typically have built up antibodies that can help fight genital herpes, so they don’t always get bad outbreaks.
