Can songs be used as ringtones?
Most cell phones that can play MP3s do allow you to assign songs on the phone as ringtones, so on first glance this seems like an obvious question. Unfortunately, Steve Jobs’ MSWF ’07 Keynote (iTunes store link) revealed little on the subject, except one problematic piece of information. When Jobs shows the iPhone in iTunes, ready to be synced, one of the tabs at the top is “Ringtones.” Now this could simply mean Apple is providing a clean way to manage your songs-as-ringtones, but it also suggests Apple intends to start selling ringtones themselves via the iTunes music store. This would be a lucrative new market for Apple. In February, ACTV points out that Jobs stated that Apple is unsure whether they will allow songs to be used as ringtones. I hope the iPhone will be able to, because I enjoy taking songs, cutting them down in Garage Band, and exporting them to my phone to use as ringtones. I really do not want to pay twice for a song I already have just to use a portion of it as a ri
