Can the European Language Portfolio be utilized in the Japanese context?

0

This study reports an interim finding for developing an e-portfolio, which is going to be used for supporting the Japanese university students’ English learning, based on the European Language Portfolio (ELP). The ELP is a set of educational documents for recording the process of foreign language learning and fostering the autonomous language learner established by the Council of Europe. The ELP have been used widely for exploring the better language learning centered around European countries nowadays. However, little is known about the applicability of the ELP in Asian Countries, especially in case of a country whose context is so called “monolingual” and “homogeneous” society such as Japan. Based on the research result about English learning among the Japanese university students (N=160), it is discussed about the contextual and methodological differences for developing an e-portfolio based on the ELP and the applicability of the proposed e-portfolio in Japan.
