Sleep is in many ways a psychological construct. Now, when you deprive people of sleep, they are likely to report a number of subjective emotions. However, even if you entirely ignored the subjective feelings, you can still gain some insight into how they feel through objective methods – observing their eating patterns, their personal grooming or watching them slowly lose weight and die (the dying part hasn’t been done in experimental neuroscience of course).
