Can there be anything done to make solid hardwood more stable?
Yes. Solid hardwood flooring, if it was properly dried, milled, finished and installed, is very stable. The way the modern tongue and groove is designed and milled, with it’s hinge and wedging effect, absorbs much of the movement and seasonal gapping. Also the nailing machines and fasteners we have today, hold the hardwood down to oriented strand or plywood sub-floor, creating a more stable installation. More stable, but not absolute.
