Can transmission fluid be used instead of hydraulic fluid in a log splitter?

I wouldn’t suggest it. Transmission fluid is much thinner and will break down much faster than hydraulic fluid and is probably why it’s not retracting properly. Might need to tear it down and clean it up and put the right fluid in. All transmission fluid does for leaky hydraulics is swell up the seals to slow down leaks. Not good for they systems to change around fluids at all.
