T Oxman, M Arad, M Shapiro, R Klein, et al OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the protective effect of preconditioning against ischemic and reperfusion tachyarrhythmias depends on the type of short and long term ischemia. ANIMALS AND METHODS: Isolated Krebs-Henseleit-perfused rat hearts underwent 5 mins of regional or global ischemia with reperfusion before sustained regional or global ischemia. The effects of preconditioning on tachyarrhythmia were studied. RESULTS: Preconditioning by regional ischemia before 30 mins of regional ischemia almost completely abolished tachyarrhythmias on reperfusion. Preconditioning by global ischemia before sustained regional ischemia prevented ischemic tachyarrhythmias but was not protective against tachyarrhythmias on reperfusion. Preconditioning by either regional or global ischemia before sustained global ischemia did not affect the absolute incidence of reperfusion tachyarrhythmias but shifted the temporal relationship between the incidence of repe
