Yes, book bags and backpacks are allowed but will be subject to x-ray/search. You are allowed 1 carry-on and 1 personal item. Personal item is a purse, portfolio, or a briefcase/laptop. Carry-ons must be able to fit in the overhead or under the seat in front of you, otherwise they will have you check them at the gate and they will be returned to you at your arrival gate. Oh, yeah… liquids… they are having a big stink about liquids now. Toothpaste, lotion, gel, anything that even resembles a liquid must be placed in a plastic zip-loc bag and the total of all liquids you are bringing must be less than 3oz. You can bring as much as you like in your checked baggage, this rule is just for carry-ons. Oh, and if you have one of those tiny little scissors in your toiletry kit (for trimming facial hair), better take it out or they’ll snag it at security.
