Can ultrasound help decide if they are identical twins?
Of course, if the fetal genders are different then we know for sure that they are not identical. Beyond that, however, it gets a little more complex. By evaluating the placenta and the thickness of the membrane that separates the twins the physician or Sonographer can know with a high degree of confidence that they are or are not identical. However, it is impossible to know with 100% certainty.
