Can Wales learn from Europe about passing laws?
Jan 21 2009 by David Rosser, Western Mail LAST month the European Parliament voted to support an amendment to the Working Time Directive which would see the UK opt-out from the 48-hour maximum working week phased out over a three-year period. This was an extraordinary decision, particularly in the context of a global economic recession when flexibility to maintain business activity, and to position economies to participate in any eventual upturn, would have been expected to be uppermost in MEPs’ minds. And when so many people are losing their jobs, removing the ability of their partners to work longer hours, if they choose, to maintain family incomes is arrogant. It smacks of politicians deciding they know what is best and shows a lack of understanding of modern working practices that is disappointing. But is that it?
