Your eye cannot respond to colors outside the “visible” range. The brain isn’t simply ignoring them. You don’t have to imagine what ultraviolet or infrared images might look like, there are cameras that are sensitive to these wavelengths that can show results in visible “false” colors that allow you see things like slight temperature variations that are otherwise invisible to you.

The human eye isn’t designed to “see colors” outside of what we call the visible spectrum. However – technically, a “color” is entirely dependent on the individual. You might actually be seeing UV light right now, which means that you are seeing its color, but the way that the brain is wired, you don’t actually perceive it as a color. We define certain wavelengths of visible light as having a color value associated with them, but consider this, even if you and I are looking at the same wavelength under the exact same conditions, we might not be seeing the same color – you may see red, and I would also see red, but because of the way that my brain is wired, my “red” looks “blue” while your “red” looks “red.” Since neither one of us has ever seen the color “red” look anything else than the color that we accept it to be, then we can call two different “colors” red, and both be right.
