Professor Amyes et al. Although there are some short-term possibilities, the problem of these resistant bacteria causing nosocomial infections is still a potential future drain on NHS resources. Two major resistance strains are prevalent within Scotland. The vanA operon is evolving, with specific patterns reflecting different antibiotic usage patterns found within areas. The vanB operon spreads more clonally. Both of these strains are closely related to sensitive enterococci, suggesting the potential for further resistant strains to emerge. The study suggests that combination therapy with Synercid and fluoroquinolones might be effective in the short term, but further research is required to develop strategies to control this bacterium.
