It depends on what your interests in interior decorating/design are. If you are going to become an interior designer, then you are probably going to need to know how to use computer aided drawing (CAD) so that you can communicate your plans clearly to your subcontractors and clients. You could become an interior decorator specializing in interior redesign. Redesigners "redecorate" rooms by removing everything to have a "blank slate" and then physically place the furniture, artwork and accessories -- think of it as working "3 dimensionally"! Some redesigners do like to sketch out their ideas prior to doing a redesign, but many of them work in "real time" and never use floor plans.  more
