The complex answer: homosexuals are allowed to become Baha’is with the understanding that once they do so, they strive to follow the laws of the religion to the very best of their ability. This includes abstention from pre- and extra-marital sexual activity. Baha’is do not recognize same-sex marriage as valid within the religion (extremely important note: Baha’is as an institution DO NOT SPEAK to the issue of same-sex marriage as a civil right or law). Someone has already said that sexual orientation does not equal sexual action, and that’s basically the line that the Baha’i Faith draws. While the Faith reserves the right to suspend the rights of those who intentionally and flagrantly break Baha’i law, in practice it’s uncommon to take that grave a step. A sexually active gay person would probably not feel comfortable in a Baha’i community though, I must admit.
