Can you camp in the Australian outback without a camping site?
Hi, I live and work in the Outback. I go bush and camp all the time for my work. I need to know the rules about camping in places where there are no campgrounds. The answer to this is both YES and NO. Lots of ‘outback travel guide’ type websites don’t know the WHOLE truth about this – so be warned! On Aboriginal land and in National Parks, you cannot legally camp unless you are camping in a designated camping area OR you have a permit (from the National Parks service or an Aboriginal Land Council). Now this is the bit that the outback travel guides DON’T tell you because they’re written by tour companies or people who’ve only camped in camping grounds instead of needing to know the laws about camping when you’re working outback! You CAN camp anywhere in the road reserves in the outback on all public roads. The road reserves in the outback are generally 250 metres either of the road’s centreline.
