Yes you can put tile on an upstairs bathroom floor. The weight will be distributed across the floor. You will need an underlayment before applying the tile. Concrete backerboard is a good choice that’s easy to use. If you do not use an underlayment, over time the grout lines will crack and the tiles will loosen and start coming up. The concrete backerboard will also help protect the floor joists and ceiling below from water damage since this is a bathroom area. Keep in mind that the underlayment and tile combined will raise the height of the bathroom floor about an inch. There are many floor trim mouldings available that help the transition (reducer strips). If you are planning to do the job yourself, be sure to use sanded grout and make the grout lines at least 1/4″ for durability.
