Lettuce can be grown all the year round. Some varieties grow better at different times of the year. Hearting varieties are best grown in the summer. Varieties like Iceberg will grow quite happily over winter in an unheated greenhouse (put a fleece over them if the outside temperature threatens to drop below minus 5). Carrots are more seasonal although there are early and late varieties. You can bring forward the early ones to be ready about April by sowing them indoors and growing in the greenhouse. Similarly you can keep the late ones going until around November. Grow a main crop to mature in September and pack them in a sack separated by shredded paper. (Dry peat is better, but it’s not currently regarded as environmentally friendly). Keep them in a cool place and they’ll keep right through the winter and well into the next season.
