On One Hand: Methylated Spirits Are PermissableA hurricane lantern is a device with a glass chimney and a metal top with holes to allow a wick or candle to burn even in high winds and rainy conditions. These lamps will burn using a variety of fuels, including methylated spirits. On the Other: Kerosene is the Most Common FuelYou usually use kerosene in a hurricane lantern. You can also use bio fuels such as coconut oil, vegetable oil or even olive oil–the oil used by the Greeks in their lamps–to run the lamp. Diesel fuel can be used if you have nothing else available in an emergency.Bottom LineThese versatile lamps can be run on a wide a variety of fuels including methylated spirits. You will find that methylated spirits alone burn very hot and can damage the lantern if left burning too long.

I think it is better to use kerosene fuel. But, anyway, why do not you choose anything better? Nowadays, people created a camping lantern that is on batteries, why would you want to use a fuel one? It’s safer and easier to manage.

I understand that many people use what they like and what they are used to, but I think it would be better to switch to something newer. Something that will not be able to harm people and damage the environment. Plus, I suppose the batteries are much cheaper than the fuel.
