There’s little doubt you can store more clothes using the wire hangers. The plastic hangers are thicker and take up more room on the rack. However, simply fitting more clothes in the closet is not always your best bet. Overstuffing your closet makes clothes hard to find. Too many clothes in the closet may also lead to wrinkling and crushing, since the clothes will be jammed together as you search for items. IMO, there isn’t a type of hanger that doesn’t have its drawbacks. Plastic hangers look better, true, but are more liable to break, are bulky, expensive and slippery. Wire hangers are cheap and can be recycled at some laundromats, but they can bend and aren’t good for knit items. Wooden hangers store things well, but they’re not as versatile and they’re expensive. Padded hangers work somewhat well for knit items (provided the items don’t slide right off again), but they’re slippery and REALLY take up a lot of space, plus they’re expensive.
