Can you take a cell phone on an airplane to listen to music or watch a movie on?

If your cell phone is in flight/airplane mode, then technically you are not breaking any rules; you just can’t have it in regular mode where it can make/receive voice calls or text messages. However, it is totally up to the airline whether or not they will allow you to use it. I regularly fly with an airline that will not allow cell phones on at all, not even in flight/airplane mode. Your safest bet would be to ask the flight attendants when you board the plane if you can use your cell phone in flight/airplane mode just to listen to music or watch movies.
