Can I just read a book, attend a parenting class, and talk with family and friends to get the help I need for my child or adolescent?
You can certainly try that, but you may have already tried several of those methods. From my experience, most of the parents I work with have already tried multiple strategies to deal with their child’s behavioral or emotional problems and the behaviors simply didn’t change. The fact is, most books, classes and seminars are general in nature and often do not address your needs or the unique needs of your child or adolescent. Seeing a child psychologist affords you the opportunity to talk in detail about your child’s specific behavioral and emotional problems. A psychologist offers a neutral point of view allowing the child to discuss their home and school environments in a safe and confidential setting.
