Could an American-born man become the Prime Minister or Governor-General of Australia?

You would definitely have to be an Australian citizen and give up your US citizenship before you could be elected to the Commonwealth (federal) parliament. Technically, the Governer-General of Australia does not even have to be an Australian citizen. In practice the last non-Australian Governer-General was about 40 years ago and we will never have another Governer General who is not an Australian citizen. While the Queen appoints the Governer-General she acts on the recommendation of the Australian Prime Minister. You need to be an Australian citizen to be elected to a State parliament but I don’t thin klthat any of the states currently require a person to have relinquished dual citizenship. Local government (city/town councils) elected office is uunlikelyto require you to relinquish dual citizenship and will generally require only that you have permanent residency in Australia.
