Referendum There would be a referendum to ask people if they wanted a directly elected mayor. If it came out in favour then people would vote and select a mayor who would be responsible for the day-to-day running of local services. Back in 2001 poll, the people of Birmingham were asked whether they wanted an elected mayor. Nearly half of those who took part voted to stick with the leader and cabinet system which Birmingham has now. But that could all change with the new Coalition Government’s policies.
