Could my BLACK toy poodle be turning GREY?
Did you have a chance to see the parents and to see their color? There could be a couple if different possibilities. Silver poodles are born black and then change to the silver grey color. This change begins quite early and is first obvious on the face when it is shaved. There is also what is called dilute black. These are blacks that turn to a greyish color due to the fading gene but that change usually occurs when they are older, sometimes by a year but often even older than that. Blues are also born black but again, due to the dilution gene eventually turn to some shade of grey ranging from dark grey to lighter grey. Poodle hair color genetics is extremely complicated due to the many different genes involved and the multiple possible alleles for each gene.
