I don’t think Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama are necessarily on the same page when it comes to foreign policy. That isn’t to say Carter couldn’t be useful to Obama. Jimmy Carter is trusted by the Palestinians and the Syrians. If there is to be peace in the middle east, it’s going to require trust between all involved parties. Obama will probably stick with the man he’s already sent for the time being (George Mitchell). Carter is also known for his work in monitoring international elections and probably will continue to work in that capacity.
Potentially. I think Jimmy Carter has gained more respect since he left office. He could be an asset to President Obama. However, so far, President Obama hasn’t needed help on foreign affairs. He has been very well-received during his trips to Europe and Asia. I think people all over the world are willing to give Obama a fair chance. If he makes a mistake down the line, though, Jimmy Carter may be a good person to pull in for assistance with the international community. Sources: It is my opinion.

Like Obama, Carter’s past political career seemed foreign to most of the media — his southern-based political past looked small time and hard for the national media to grasp. Obama’s meteoric rise from Chicago-style politics to a brief stint in the Senate left him an enigma to many as well.
