The perennial things that are already growing in the garden need some weeding, cultivation, and then lots of mulch--something that will keep the moisture in and the weeds from growing. If the perennials have been in the ground for some time, clumps of plants may need thinning. Till the area for annual crops early. Check the soil pH to make sure it is slightly acid. If it too acid or basic, ask your garden shop what to add to adjust the pH. Figure out what you want to grow. There are two broad types of annual plants that go in a garden. Early corps--planted as soon as the soil is tilled and ready to plant: lettuce, cabbage type plants, carrots, onions, beets, peas, and several others are in this category. Crops to be planted after the threat of last frost (June): Tomatoes, peppers, egg plant, beans, most flowers, squash, pumpkins, corn, and many others. Get a good book from the library or book store that will tell you about gardening in your zone. There are many good books out there. ...  more
