Diabetes and Alcoholism

I wasn’t able to locate any research suggesting that diabetics are more likely to become alcoholics.

However people who are alcoholics may run a higher than normal risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body becomes unable to use insulin efficiently. Risk factors include family history, race, being overweight and being inactive. Since many types of alcohol are high in sugar and calories, people who consume large amounts of alcohol on a regular basis are at risk for weight gain, which in turn increases their risk for type 2 diabetes.
