Well, you need to keep in mind that when the Holocaust “first started,” it didn’t start as death camps. It started with the registration of all the Jews as Jews. Then they couldn’t have control of their money, buy property, own businesses, eat in public restaurants, attend non-Jewish schools… each step of degradation was taken in stride for the most part. “If this is the worst of it, we can handle this.” Most of Europe had a kind of optomistic view of the situation in a way: Hitler and the idiology of the Nazi party were a temporary evil, and the decency of humanity would prevail. Unfortunately, apathy, and an existing anti-Semetic attitude in areas of Europe, allowed it to go on for as long as it did, and the Nazi party was able to grow in power because of a kind of snowball effect.
