Yes, they had something very much like a bikini. I was in Sicily and visited a Roman villa built by Maximilian and all of the floors were covered with mosaics. On one was featured three young women all wear what looked like bikinis. Considering that they were 2000 years old they looked very modern. The bikini we know today came from the 1950's and was made in France. Several well known models/actresses of the time were shown in Life magazine covers wearing one. The name comes from the Bikini Islands where nuclear testing was going on in the 1950's. The girls wearing the bikini were known as "bombshells.  more
