Did BCBSNC consider implementing a diagnostic imaging program several years ago?
Yes. BCBSNC developed a radiology management program in 2002 but cancelled the implementation of the program, deciding instead to closely monitor utilization rates and reassess over time. In a letter to participating physicians explaining our decision to cancel the radiology management program in 2002, we indicated that we would continue to monitor these issues closely and would continue to discuss diagnostic imaging management. The issues that led to the consideration of the program continue to be a concern, and our aim continues to be to assure members get appropriate care and not to create unnecessary inconveniences for doctors or customers.
