Did Chet play single lead lines with thumbpick or fingers?
On Don Gibsons Oh Lonesome Me I think he used his thumbpick on the fast notes. Back then Chet was really quick with his pick. I’ve seen him play a real up tempo tune and play all down strokes with his pick. As to whether Chet used his thumbpick or fingers on a given tune, when Chet was using his fingers the finger notes would sound different than the picked notes and it would be easy to hear the difference Another thing about that song, the intro on that record wasn’t played by Don Gibson but Velma Smith who Chet used a lot. She was a real good rhythm player.
