Did Custer commit suicide?
No, he did not commit suicide. It might have been better for his command if he had. He was an egotistical and arrogant leader. At the Little Big Horn he made the fatal military mistake of underestimating his enemy. He split his already small command into three, none of which could support each other rapidly. He lead his own small section into the open which played into the fighting tactics of the Indians who quickly overpowered him. Another part of his command took up a more effective defencive position and managed to fight off repeated attacks for many hours. Incidentally, he was a little gun-ho in the American Civil War and although he rose to general officer rank he was of little effect. He was much more the showman than a military leader. Brave but probably stupid.
