Did Erasmus and Luther translate the bible into Greek and Latin only, or did they translate (cont)?
The Latin language was predominant in the Western Churches from the mid-3rd century to the Reformation. For over 1,000 years, various Latin versions of the Bible were doing the rounds. They had been translated from the original Bible languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. One of the jobs of the Reformers was to get existing, and mainly Latin, translations into the vernacular German of the day (in Germany) or English (in Britain) etc. Erasmus of Rotterdam (1467-1536) ‘laid the egg which Luther hatched’ by writing satires (Christian Soldier’s Manual, Colloquies, Praise of Folly). His edition of the Greek New Testament was the first ever printed (1516 – the year before the Reformation began.) So that was in Greek and may have been translated from existing Greek texts and/or Latin ones. In 1521 Luther was hiding at the Wartburg where he translated the New Testament from Greek into German. But both scholars were as well versed in Latin as they were in those other languages. All biblical sc
