Well, it’s now several months later, and I haven’t heard any more about this. Likely, it’s not SECRECY, per se, that caused this, but rather miscommunication OR one or both ships were not operating in their assigned operating envelopes for some reason. Of course, there is a huge amount of secrecy that encoumpasses submarine operations and deployments. I should know, after 20 years as a submariner myself. However, submarines do not operate without discrimination as to their depths and area. Submarines operate in what is known as “operating envelopes” and these are determined by a variety of things. One is the known operations of a nations own submarines and surface ships. Another is international agreements with allies which also operate submarines and surface ships. Yet others are defined by the geographical characteristics of the areas being operated in. (As the USS San Francisco found out).
