On 18 June 2008, Chan was in Taipei, Taiwan to attend a fund-raising for children event, “Baby is Our Hope” held by cable TV channel TVBS. He was greeted by dozens of Taiwanese greeted him with angry slogans: “Not Welcome!” and “Get Out!” at the Taoyuan International Airport. These protestors were upset over remarks made by Chan that accused the president of staging a shooting on the eve of elections in 2004. “I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know what clothes to wear. So in the end, I just decided to be natural.”[89] Government representative Vanessa Shih asked Taiwanese residents to be calm and to be tolerant of different opinions.
