Did pirates bury treasure in Nova Scotia?
No. All the records indicate that pirates quickly divided and spent whatever they captured. A few pirates talked about hiding treasure but with the possible exception of William Kidd, there is no evidence any of them ever did. However, Nova Scotia is rich in pirate folklore. Pirate legends, possibly evolved from Celtic treasure myths, exist for almost every major island in the province from Yarmouth to Cape Breton and most notably at Oak Island where treausre hunters have searched in vain for over 200 years. Even the islands in Halifax Harbour all have their own pirate legends. The powerful ghost stories and treasure myths obscure the fact that no one has convincingly found pirate treasure anywhere.
