Did the 1811 New Madrid earthquake actually cause the Mississippi River to run backwards?

Yes it did flow backwards. It formed the Reelfoot Lake. The earthquake was felt as far away as Boston. This is taken from Earth Science report by Geological survey of Alabama by David Kopaska-Merkel.
