Most founders were true liberals (see below). Some were conservative and wanted market protections. That was one of the battles between the Federalists (more conservative) and the anti-Federalists (more truly liberal). The Federalists called for the Constitutional Convention to change the Articles of Confederation (our first constitution) but that made an entirely new constitution (today’s) instead. The anti-Federalists didn’t want the new one because it gave more power to the federal government but they accepted it when their demand for a Bill of Rights was promised, and later also ratified. The Constitution was ratified by the states in 1789 and the Bill of Rights in 1791, I believe. True liberalism advocates: individual freedom, weak government, and free markets. Conservatism advocates: moral responsibility, strong government, and protected markets. Socialism advocates: social responsibility, omnipotent government, and controlled markets.
