They were a nomad people who lived in yurts (round tents made of felt). They conquered a lot of cities (a very great many) all over Asia in the largest empire the world had yet seen. They were tightly organized in two ways: through military rank (every male was an archer and horseman) and through clan & tribal affiliation. The empire was much too large to be administered by one person, so it separated into the Mongols who ruled China, those who ruled Afghanistan, those who ruled Persia and Iraq, and those who ruled Russia (the Golden Horde). Their expansion was stopped by the Mamluks of Egypt and by political crisis back in Mongolia when they reached Poland. These khanates were mostly concerned with collecting tribute and with acts of submission upon the part of the conquered people. They had a script and promulgated a number of laws, many having to deal with the protection of trade and travelers. Thanks to the Mongols Marco Polo was able to travel to and from China without being robbe
