serial delivers one bit at a time, where a parallel port can deliver multiple bytes at once, depending on the size.  more

Parallel port is mostly for printers. And the serial port is used for modems, controllers, or other devices. Most new machines are coming "Legacy Free" which means that they don't have parallel and serial ports, only USB.  more
