As a cat owner i can’t believe people would declaw them, why not take the teeth out of a dog. My cats happily scratch my furniture and me!! It’s part of owning a cat.

I agree with you 100% I would never declaw any animal. The people who get their cats declawed are cruel. If they are worried about their furniture they should have thought it through before getting a cat. I didn’t know that the whole joint was removed. That makes it a whole lot worse. I always thought that they just pulled out the cats claws. How could anyone do this to an animal? They would get a portion of their cat cut off causing the cat lots of pain, just to protect furniture? This is crualty and should be banned. I agree with you completely.

I didn’t know a lot about declawing until a few months ago, I’d heard of it but thought it was what the name implies deCLAWING, when I found out that it is in fact major amputation surgery I was shocked to say the least and I and some of my contacts have been trying to get to those people who still think it is acceptable in an effort to make sure that they know the full extent of what they are inflicting on their cat. I think the majority of people who answer questions do genuinely have some knowledge that is invaluable but you always get the ones that a) only do it for the points (as though they can actually DO anything with the points) b) deliberately write something inflammatory just for the fun of it or c) THINK they know something but sadly don’t! Littlebit your story made me so sad, anyone planning to declaw their cat should be forced to read what you have written, it would surely change their minds.

Sorry to say, it may be just for the two points that some people post. I don’t know what it really gets them, however. As far as declawing, some people may want a quick answer, without weighing the potential problems. As far as being illegal, there are real problems in legislating behavior. For legal purposes, pets are considered property in most places. As far as suggesting a process that may be illegal in the country of the asker, unless the person volunteers where they live, and the responder actually goes to the effort of checking, they would have no way of knowing. The newer laser method is not as terrible as the other surgical method, but one still is doing a major operation, and it is not like trimming a cat’s claws. And also understand that this forum is not moderated. That means there is no real censor, so total jerks can post where ever they want. One can only report abuse for the worst of the posts, and it takes two reports before it could be removed.
