Do all women suffer with sore nipples while breastfeeding?
No! Breastfeeding should be a pleasant experience. Although some initial tenderness is common, nipples should not be reddened, cracked or extremely sore. Usually, sore nipples are a sign that the baby is not positioned or latched well to the breast. The old saying, “prevention is the best cure” is certainly true with sore nipples. A breastfeeding class before the baby is born is recommended to learn the best ways to position the baby and to encourage the baby to open his mouth wide. In addition, it is a good idea to have a nurse assist you with breastfeeding while you are in the hospital. If a mother’s nipples do get sore, it is important to have a breastfeeding specialist (such as a Lactation Consultant) evaluate the problem and offer appropriate solutions. There are many effective ways to treat sore nipples and the earlier treatment is sought, the more successful and satisfying breastfeeding will be for mother and baby.
