Most (though not all) schools have kids face the American flag at the beginning of the day and say the Pledge of Allegience. It goes as follows: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." It was originally written in 1892, but there have been a number of changes to its wording since then, most notably the addition of the words "under God" in 1954. Schools are not legally allowed to mandate that children say the pledge, and there have been a few controversies over this (particularly religious ones).
